Jongno Jewelry Shopping Street

Jongno Jewelry Shopping Street, located in Jongno, a central district of Seoul, is well known nationwide.

It is estimated to house between 2,000 and 4,000 jewelry stores of every size and packed close together in one district.

Jongno district has always had a large floating population and has been a well-developed commercial area since olden times.

The jewelry street in its current form has existed since the 1960s.

Even though the area has repeatedly undergone major changes to its academic and entertainment venues, the jewelry street continues to be as lively as ever.

At present, about 70 percent of the domestic jewelry market is traded on Jongno Jewelry Shopping Street.

The first thing that catches the eye is the number of wholesale and retail stores lining the street (Jongnodaero), which now form a new commercial zone in the area.

Here, customers can purchase jewelry at around 20 to 40 percent cheaper than market prices, since most stores have close connections with jewelry-makers and can lower prices.

Proof of this is the number of gold-and-silver workshops nearby, in an area slightly bigger than 3.3 square meters.

Jewelry Street is especially popular with lovers and soon-to-be-married couples, and overseas tourists frequently visit looking for Korean jewelry at low prices.
