Hongik Books started as a street vendor in 1957 and has become a Sinchon landmark for over 60 years, making it South Korea's oldest bookstore.
It was once a popular meeting spot in Sinchon.
The bookstore moved to its current building in 1978, initially using only the first and second floors, and expanded to occupy the entire building in 1984.
Now in its second generation of family operation, Hongik Books takes its name from the Hongik Ingan philosophy, which means "to benefit humanity broadly." The bookstore is dedicated to serving customers, partners, employees, and family.
In front of Hongik Books is "Literary Street," which features the handprints of 15 prominent Korean writers and hosts romantic street piano concerts.
